Samuel Krieger, 94, died Dec. 30 in Los Altos.

He was born Jan. 2, 1912, in Philadelphia, Pa. He received a bachelor's degree in education and a master's degree in botany from the University of Pennsylvania in 1933 and 1935, respectively, and an M.B.A. from New York University in 1941. He was a certified public accountant in New York from 1942, a member of the Institute of Internal Auditors from 1975 and chief auditor at Schenley Industries prior to his retirement in 1977. He later worked part time as a travel agent in New York. He and his wife moved to Palo Alto in 1991 to be near his children and grandchildren.

He was an active volunteer both in New York and Palo Alto. He served as a voluntary arbitrator for the American Arbitration Association and was a member of the Grand Jurors Association. For nearly a decade he led a weekly music program at the Hebrew Home for the Aged in Riverdale, N.Y., and was Volunteer of the Year in 1983. He also mentored youths at the Ittleson Center in Riverdale. He volunteered at Lytton Gardens and was Volunteer of the Year in 1998.

He will be remembered not only for his many civic contributions but also for his love of travel, walking and gourmet foods, as well as his enthusiastic singing.

He was preceded in death in 2002 by his wife of 49 years, Sylvia Manker Krieger. He is survived by his devoted children, Joani and Larry Mitchell of Palo Alto and Wendy and David Lake of San Diego; his five grandchildren, Dan, Rachel, and Shoshana Mitchell and Brenden and Dylan Lake; and his sister, Augusa Rudnick of New York, N.Y.
