Dr. Philip Martin Eastman passed away at his home in Portola Valley, California on Tuesday, June 19, 2018 after a long illness. Philip was born on January 27, 1936 to Herman Eastman and Rose Frieder Eastman in the Bronx, New York. He is survived by his wife, Jean, sons, David and Peter, daughter-in-law, Catharine, and grandchildren, Hannah and Ryan. He was predeceased by his parents and by his sisters, Caryl Silver and Adrienne Golub.
Philip graduated from Union College and received his medical degree from SUNY Downstate College of Medicine. He later completed a three-year fellowship in hematology at Stanford University School of Medicine.
Philip had many opportunities for adventure and travel, spending his junior year of college at St. Andrews, Scotland, and a semester of medical school at Guys Hospital in London. He joined the Peace Corps in 1963, running a hospital in Mekele, Ethiopia. In 1967 Philip entered the U.S. Army, serving as a physician in Vietnam where he where he was awarded a Silver Star. He later returned with his family to Ethiopia to teach at the College of Public Health in Gondar. Back at home he joined the medical staff at the San Mateo County Medical Center where he spent 25 years, serving for three years as Chief of Staff. Philip loved to run, backpack, attend concerts, build furniture, travel, and especially to visit with his beloved friends and family.
A celebration of Philip's life will be held at his home on a date to be announced. Jane, David, and Petet, I am in tears to findout now about Dr. Eastman. I am so sorry to findout this bad news while trying to call you and Dr.Eastman. I gappened to end up on Google and discovered tge 'Lasting Memories.' I an now in total shock!!!! My dearest friend and Counsellor has passed away. I will try to call you soon. Alem
