Lois Jean Larson, a longtime resident of Atherton, died May 1, 2016. She was 89.

Lois was born in Huntington Park, California, to Walter and Rachel Aspenleiter. After high school she studied bookkeeping and secretarial skills. Her first job was with a bank in Los Angeles.

At the age of 15, she met her future husband, John R. Larson, a Naval Seaman, studying at USC and stationed in Long Beach. In February 1947 they married.

In June 1953 they moved to Redwood City, where her husband had grown up. In 1954 they purchased a home in Atherton. They had three children.

Lois and John were active in the Palo Alto Elks Lodge for many years. Lois worked for United California Bank, First Interstate Bank, and then Wells Fargo Bank before she retired in 1986.

Later in life they purchased a travel trailer and visited old friends throughout the United States.

For more than two decades they attended annual reunions of the USS Wharton across the U.S. After the death of her husband, Lois traveled with the Palo Alto AARP group and "The Gad-A-Bouts," sponsored by Lennie Lane.

Lois loved to read and watch British mysteries on TV.

Lois was preceded in death by her husband, John; son, Walter; and grandson, Johnny.

Lois is survived by her daughter, Beverly Browne of Atherton, California; her son, David Larson of Everson, Washington; grandchildren, Cynde Elkins of Los Gatos; and Virgil, Lars, Amber and Rachel Larson of Washington; as well as nine great-grandchildren.
