Benjamin Garrett Carson passed away at the age of 38 on the evening of Nov. 15, 2018, at the Stanford Hospital in Palo Alto. He is survived by his wife, Brooke, and 7-year-old daughter, Claire.
Ben was born May 12, 1980, in Springfield, Illinois. He spent his early childhood years in the Maryland suburbs to the northwest of Washington, D.C. He moved with his family to Vancouver, Washington in 1989. That year at the age of 9 he first met his future wife, Brooke Agate. They attended Hudson's Bay High School together in Vancouver, where Ben served as student body vice president and captain of the varsity basketball team his senior year.
An active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Ben served in the Chile Conception Mission from 1999 to 2001. He and Brooke were married in the Portland Oregon Temple on June 21, 2002.
In 2004 Ben graduated from the University of California, Berkeley, with a bachelor's in Economics. He earned a Juris Doctor from Georgetown University Law Center in Washington, D.C., in 2007. Ben practiced with the firm of Chadbourne & Parke in New York City from 2007 to 2011. In 2011 he moved to California to join the Silicon Valley office of Jones Day in Palo Alto, where he practiced merger and acquisition law. He was admitted to the bar in New York and California.
Ben was diagnosed with a rare form of bone cancer in 2012. Throughout his illness and subsequent treatments he continued to practice law, serve in his Church, and remain active. Ben was a devoted husband and father who enjoyed traveling with his family and skiing. During his last few months Ben's cancer began to grow more aggressively, so weakening his body that he succumbed on Nov. 15 at the hospital with Brooke by his side.
A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 24, 2018 at East Lawn Memorial Hills cemetery located at 4800 N. 650 Provo, Utah 84601.
