Palo Alto, California

Submitted by Donald Shaw

Robert “Bobby” McMillen, a loyal son and devoted friend, passed away at the age of 78 on Wednesday, February 11, 2026. Born and raised in Palo Alto, California, Robert grew up in this community that remained central to his life until his death. He was preceded in death by his beloved mother, father and brother.

Robert proudly served his country during the Vietnam era from 1968 to 1971 and received an honorable discharge. After his military service, he attended Pacific University, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in Business and Economics. While at university, he helped establish the Carmon Cunningham Scholarship to expand educational opportunities for underprivileged students. He later earned a master’s degree in Accounting from Notre Dame de Namur University, obtained his CPA license in 1995, and founded his tax practice, serving Palo Alto and the Bay Area for three decades.

A man of Catholic faith, Robert lived his beliefs through action. He assisted those experiencing homelessness, offering meals, transportation and steady support. He lived throughout his life as a fatherly and grandfatherly role model to many not his own, caring for them as if they were with extraordinary devotion.

Robert was reliable and generous toward his family, chosen family and friends. He showed up for their life’s milestones and everyday moments including weddings, births, deaths, graduations, school sporting events, and countless conversations filled with laughter often over a shared meal.

Robert loved Diet Coke, the San Francisco Giants, Stanford athletics, and everything Nike, earning the nickname “Nikeman.” His life will be remembered with love and gratitude by all who knew him.
