Robert (Bob) W. Taylor

Robert W. (Bob) Taylor, 82, a longtime resident of Portola Valley, died Aug. 6 from complications resulting from a stroke.

Born in Los Angeles, Calif., he grew up in Los Altos Hills. He attended Los Altos Grammar School and Palo Alto High School, then attended Stanford University until joining a Navy V-12 Unit and completing his undergraduate work at the California Institute for Technology (Cal Tech) in Pasadena, Calif. After completing his Navy duty, he returned to Stanford to do graduate work at the School of Journalism.

In 1950 he married Virginia (Ginny) Mays of Bronxville, NY. The couple moved to Trona, Calif., where he was the editor of the Trona Ar.gonaut. In 1955 they moved to the then-new community of Ladera, where they raised their three children. His career included positions at such companies as Standard Oil of California, National BankAmericard, Palo Alto Medical Research Foundation and the Electric Power Research Institute.

In 2003, after suffering a stroke, he and Ginny relocated to Tacoma, Wash., to be close to their physician son, Jim. His interests included tennis, sailing, travel and gardening.

He was a longtime member of Ladera Community Church and served in many capacities there. He was also an advocate for animal welfare and the environment.

He is survived by his brother, Paul Taylor of Sacramento; sons, Curt of Portola Valley and Jim of Tacoma, Wash.; daughter, Carol Taylor Clay of Eugene, Ore.; and six grandchildren.
