Menlo Park, California
Janet Leona Scholl (née Vogel), 82, of Menlo Park, passed away peacefully on the evening of February 25, 2025.
Born in Greensburg, IN, Janet was the beloved daughter of the late Albert and Frances Vogel and the youngest of six siblings. She was preceded in death by her brothers, Al and Maury, and her sister, Mary Louise Gallagher. She leaves behind her loving husband, Richard; her son, Derrick, and his wife, Heather, along with their children, Kaitlyn and Aria; her daughter, Erica Heitstuman, and her children, Mitchell, Alexandra, and Cassidy. She is also survived by her dear sisters, Esther Geers and Ruth Barter, as well as 27 cherished nieces and nephews.
After graduating from Greensburg High School in 1960, Janet pursued her passion for nursing at St. Vincent’s School of Nursing in Indianapolis, IN, where she earned her Registered Nurse certification at St. Vincent’s Hospital.
In 1965, Janet married Richard, and they eventually settled in Northern California, where she continued her nursing career in the Labor and Delivery department at El Camino Hospital in Mountain View. Over the years, she embraced various roles, including Assistant Head Nurse and Manager, before finding her true calling as a Nursing Educator. In this role, she designed and led a program that helped train graduate nurses in Labor and Delivery—a role she cherished until her retirement in 2007.
During her husband’s career moves to New Jersey and Southern California, Janet temporarily stepped away from her own work to ensure the family remained closely connected. Upon returning to Northern California, she resumed her career at El Camino Hospital with the same dedication and passion.
Janet was a devoted and loving mother, deeply involved in her children’s lives. She served as a Cub Scout Den Mother and Girl Scout Leader and was always there to cheer them on at their school events and sports activities.
A lifelong advocate for learning, Janet returned to school after her children left for college, earning a Bachelor of Science in Nursing and a Master of Nursing Education. She was also honored with membership in Sigma Theta Tau International, the Honor Society of Nursing.
Janet’s Catholic faith was an integral part of her life. She was an active and dedicated member of her church community. She enjoyed volunteering in religious education programs, as well as participating in and coordinating laity services for decades.
Alongside her love for her family, faith, and career, Janet had a deep affection for dogs. After welcoming their first dog, Thor, she and Richard developed a lifelong love for Gordon Setters and raised many over the years, finding great joy in their companionship.
Janet will always be remembered for her kindness, dedication, and unwavering love for her family, her profession, and her faith. Her warmth and generosity touched the lives of many, and she will be deeply missed.
A memorial service will be held on Monday, April 7, 2025, at 11:00 AM at St. Denis Catholic Church in Menlo Park, CA, followed by a celebration of her life in the parish hall.
