David Faigenbaum, 85, a psychologist and longtime resident of Palo Alto, died April 21, 2007, at his Palo Alto home following a brief illness.

He was born Aug. 10, 1921, in Braddock, Penn., and grew up in Detroit, Mich. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

After the war he received his bachelor's degree in psychology in 1948 and a master's degree in clinical psychology in 1949 from Wayne State University. He earned his Ph.D. in counseling psychology from the University of Michigan in 1958. Throughout his long career he was the author of numerous academic papers.

He began his career as director of the Child Study Clinic for the Oakland County Juvenile Court from 1949 to 1955. In 1955 he became director of psychological services at the Children's Hospital of Michigan in Detroit, where he remained until his retirement in 1986.Additionally, he was an associate professor in the Department of Pediatrics at Wayne State University School of Medicine from 1958 to 1986. He also held the positions of adjunct associate professor of clinical psychology at Wayne State University from 1957 to 1986 and adjunct associate professor of clinical psychology at the University of Detroit between 1961 and 1986.

Befitting his lifelong interest in the welfare of children, he served on the board of directors of the Fresh Air Society in Detroit.

After his retirement in 1986, he moved to Palo Alto with his wife, Anne. He continued his professional interest in psychology as a member of the board of directors of the Mental Research Institute in Palo Alto and Head Start of San Mateo.

His wife of 50 years, Anne Baschin Faigenbaum, preceded him in death in 1997. He is survived by his three children, Mark Faigenbaum of San Francisco, Deborah Faigenbaum of Redwood City and Stephen Faigenbaum of Paris, France.
